Identity is one of the most important conversations in any sphere of life. Something that many never talk about or see. I want to start off by saying, it is not God's intention for you to fit in; it is not his intention for you to find acceptance everywhere. It is God's intention to take you into a place of recognition and acceptance. At that place, you will recognize who you are and you will accept the necessity of that journey and position. I believe that the unveiling of identity is imminent.
This morning God is asking you, "do you know who you are?"
He is asking us to check and recognize our identity. What he is doing in you is tied to who you are in him. He cannot do this if we don't know who we are and where we should be. I want to give you a quick 3 step process to discovering and protecting your identity;
1. Develop knowledge of God through the person of Christ. Read your bible! Get to know who Jesus is. As we get a revelation of Him, we start to discover who we are in Him. Our identity is in His identity. When he is revealed we become like him 1 John 3:2. The manifestation of the son, reveals the sons. Scripture teaches us that we are given the power to become the sons of God (John 1:12-13) but the real problem is we can never know how sons behave until we see an example. Jesus is our first example, our older brother who teaches us sonship. Our heavenly identity is tied to Him and his identity/behavior. Our goal is to emulate who he is and discover ourselves.
2. Pray for a revelation of your identity and purpose. We are sons of God and we have a purpose. The bible says we are all part of the body of Christ. You can only know which body part you are when you understand how the whole body works. Many Christians don't know where they belong because they do not even understand the church. You must understand what the church is, in order for you to understand your place in it. 1 Corinthians 12:18-26
3. Accept and embrace your identity. Conflict and chaos begins when we don't know who we are. The church is under fire because of false identities and desired identities. God chose you and he established your gifts and abilities, you should never desire to be someone else. So many Christians are not satisfied with their calling. They are waiting for something more extravagant. They want to be on the pulpit, on big stages and doing "great things" and they don't realize that God is not calling us into extravagance, he is calling us into effectiveness. The hand is most effective in doing what it was meant to be, not in trying to do something else. Gifts and callings have become perverted by ambition, and identity has become distorted by preference. It is the spirit of God who gives gifts and abilities as he wills. 1 Corinthians 12:11
When you find your identity, it is hard for you to be shaken from it. You become a ship with a solid anchor and a good foundation. You will not be tossed around by people's assumptions and ideals, you will not be intimidated by someone else's success in another place. You begin to realize that your grass does not have to be greener than anyone else's and most importantly. You become a vessel, worthy of the master's use.
Find your identity and when you do, never let go!
